Birth – “The Beginning”

Birth is raw, sacred, and unlike anything else. As a silent observer and storyteller, I document your birth with deep respect and reverence, preserving each moment—the strength in your hands, the support around you, the instant your baby arrives. My approach is unobtrusive yet intentional, combining documentary realism with a fine art eye to honor your experience in a way that feels powerful, grounded, and true. These images are for you—to remember how it felt to bring life into the world.

I'll be on call 24 hrs. a day from 38 weeks of your pregnancy until you give birth. Investing in a committed professional who understands the nature of your birth is crucial. I'll be there to artfully tell your birth story as it unfolds. Let's set up a consultation to chat about how you want your story to be told.

Birth Review: Rio

"My husband and I hired sweet Jessica to capture the birth of our second baby girl this April. I was so hesitant about doing Birth photography, as it’s obviously a very intimate moment and the thought of having someone I’d only met a couple of times be in the room while I had a baby was initially a little unnerving. But upon my first meeting with Jessica I knew she would be the perfect photographer for the job. She made me feel so insanely comfortable. She listened to my expectations and desires for the outcome and when our styles matched up- she was hired! She checked in several times during the pregnancy and when I went into labor she was FAST on her feet and got to the birth center just as quickly as the rest of our party (good thing because it was a fast and furious birth). I honestly didn’t even notice Jessica was there for the entire birth, partially because I mean, I was in labor. But mostly because she was just super quiet and just snuck in where there was space to get her shots and that was that. After the birth she stayed for a while to get some photos of our new family for four status. This is when I got to experience her direction and coaching for posing. I am terrible at being in photos and posing right etc etc, but Jessica was a great coach and literally got the perfect shots. She edited the photos from my birth THE SAME DAY I HAD MY BABY. To be able to wake up in the morning, and relive our experience through someone else’s eyes was just indescribably beautiful. And the photos. Oh my god the photos. Indescribably beautiful. Jessica not only exceeded my entire family’s expectations of how a birthing shoot could turn out- but managed to capture moments that our family will cherish for forever. A million thank yous, Jessica. I would hire you again in a heartbeat."

*The Beginning of Something Beautiful*

I don’t take on every session or every story — not because I don’t want to, but because I believe in giving each family the care, time, and heart they truly deserve.

This form is more than just a step in the process — it’s an invitation.

A way for you to pause, reflect, and share what matters most.

A way for me to listen — really listen — before we begin.

If you’re here, you’re not just booking a service.

You’re choosing to be seen. Held. Remembered.

And I’m so honored to be considered for that kind of work.

We will set up a complimentary consultation to go over everything and see if we are a good fit for you and your family!

FAQ

What is birth storytelling photography and film?

Birth storytelling is a documentary, cinematic approach to documenting labor, birth, and the first moments of meeting your baby. Using both photography and film, these sessions preserve not just how birth looked, but how it felt, the movement, emotion, and connection of the experience.

How long do you stay at a birth?

Birth coverage begins when active labor is established and continues through delivery and the immediate postpartum period. Coverage is not limited by the clock, I stay to document the full story as it unfolds.

Are you on call for birth sessions?

Yes. Birth storytelling includes on-call availability around your due date to ensure I am ready when labor begins. On-call details and travel boundaries are outlined clearly during booking.

Is video distracting during labor?

Not at all. Birth films are captured quietly and intentionally, without staging or interruption. The focus remains on your birth experience, with documentation happening unobtrusively in the background.

Can you be both our birth photographer and doula?

Yes. For families who desire continuity of care, birth photography, film, and doula support may be combined into a single integrated experience. This allows for one on-call period and a deeply connected approach to both support and documentation.

What if our birth plan changes?

Birth is unpredictable, and flexibility is expected. Whether plans shift in timing, location, or interventions, the goal remains the same: to document your story with care, respect, and presence.

Where do birth sessions take place?

Birth storytelling is available for home births, birth centers, and hospital births, depending on provider and facility policies. Travel boundaries and permissions are discussed prior to booking.

How many birth stories do you accept each year?

To provide attentive, sustainable care, a limited number of birth storytelling clients are accepted each year. Once availability is full, families are encouraged to inquire about future dates or referrals.

Is Birth Storytelling Right for You?

Birth storytelling is a documentary, cinematic approach to documenting labor and birth as it naturally unfolds. It may be a wonderful fit for families who value presence, authenticity, and emotional storytelling over control or perfection. When you are in labor you're not able to see a lot of the things that are truly special and often miss out on moments happening with family and friends that you get to look back on with photo + film.

What if we’re unsure about having our birth documented?

It’s completely normal to feel unsure. Many families share this concern initially. Birth storytelling is never intrusive or staged, and consent is respected throughout your labor. Your comfort and experience always come first. If you’re on the fence, we can talk through your preferences during your consultation to ensure birth documentation feels supportive, not overwhelming.

Can we limit what is photographed or filmed?

Absolutely. Your preferences and boundaries are always honored. Specific requests around privacy, sensitive moments, or certain angles can be discussed in advance and respected during your birth.
